Living a Life That Matters

Evelyn Amar’s family book Living a Life That Matters is a deeply personal and heartfelt narrative chronicling her life, family history, and reflections on resilience, love, and service. Filled with interesting and sometimes humorous stories, along with a delicious spread of Evelyn’s photos, this book is rich in its reflection of life and inspiring people.

Born in London in 1944 during the buzz bomb attacks of World War II, Evelyn’s early years were shaped by her family’s Jewish heritage and the trauma of the Holocaust. Her parents, Gina Josipovici and Paul Grunberger, were central figures whose lives were marked by survival, adaptability, and a deep commitment to family.

Evelyn’s mother, Gina, fled Vienna in 1939 to escape Nazi persecution, leaving behind her parents and brothers who were later victims of the Holocaust. Known for her generosity, Gina often prioritized others over herself, embodying a spirit of selflessness. Her baking, especially plum cakes, became a symbol of warmth and family. Evelyn recalls Gina’s unwavering commitment to family traditions and her struggle with guilt over losing loved ones to the atrocities of war.

Evelyn’s father, Paul, demonstrated resilience and resourcefulness throughout his life. After serving in the British Army during World War II, he returned to Czechoslovakia to confront the loss of his family, who had perished in Nazi concentration camps. Paul’s journey from a soldier to a restaurateur in Montreal reflects his adaptability and determination. His culinary ventures, such as opening Le Quick and other establishments, became a testament to his ability to rebuild and provide for his family.

Evelyn’s own journey is a testament to her strength and commitment to family and community. After immigrating to Canada in 1952, Evelyn navigated cultural shifts, multiple school changes, and the challenges of building a new life in Montreal. Her career began in administrative roles, and she later embraced entrepreneurial ventures alongside her husband, Albert Amar, whom she describes as the love of her life. Their marriage marked a blending of Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jewish traditions, a testament to Evelyn’s openness and adaptability.

The narrative also highlights Evelyn’s enduring bond with her sister, Janie, and their shared memories of childhood, family struggles, and triumphs. Evelyn’s reflections on her children and grandchildren reveal her pride in her family’s legacy and her desire to pass on the values of love, perseverance, and the importance of remembering one’s roots.

Themes of resilience, service, and the importance of family permeate the book. Evelyn’s life is guided by the Jewish concept of mitzvah, acts of kindness and responsibility toward others, earning her the affectionate title “The Mitzvah Maven.” The narrative weaves personal anecdotes with historical context, shedding light on the impact of global events on individual lives.

Living a Life that Matters is more than a family history; it is a celebration of survival, a tribute to those who came before, and a gift to future generations. Through her storytelling, Evelyn ensures that the sacrifices and triumphs of her family are remembered and honored, leaving a lasting legacy of hope and perseverance.
